The Hungku Water Project

This represents an opportunity to save a small microenvironment in the Arfak Mountains of Indonesian New Guinea. I plan to raise money to help the Sougb Tribe bring fresh water to their village. The land is home to no less than eleven endemic bird species including the “clever one” the amazing Vogelkop Bower Bird (Amblyornis inornatus) said to sit on the edge of avian evolution. Furthermore it is considered to be the evolutionary center of Birdwing Butterflies. Rare orchids and medicinal plants thrive. The area is off limits to foreigners and scientific investigation. As an artist with brush and canvas I have recorded local endemics.

Aggressive mining and lumber companies are working their way to the land’s natural resources and thus to the inevitable destruction of this pure environment.

The custodians of this land are an indigenous tribe living a life closely woven into the unique environment. As civilization rapidly approaches, the people must join the modern world without losing their soul. They have already lost their clean water so this is their immediate need. Presently they are using contaminated water for cooking, drinking and bathing, in short, the daily activities of life. The Hungku Water Project is designed to meet these needs by installing thirty five hundred meters of pipe from a safe water source to two collectors and then on to the villages. The indigenous tribe will provide most of the labor guided by an engineer familiar with local conditions.

The cost is twenty thousand dollars of which five thousand has been raised. Contributions will be sent in installments as they are received. An engineer, the tribal chief, and a missionary will administer the Project. The local missionary will maintain a bank account. Copies of all transactions will be sent to the engineer, the chief, and the missionary.

With the money raised so far, The Project has been launched. Purchased materials such as pipes, and shovels are being transported to the mountains by tribal members. A not for profit 501C3 is in place to make all contributions tax deductible, and I urge you to do so, please send your check to:
